Summary:

“Quite simply, The Barn is the best dog-friendly accommodation that we have ever stayed at”

We have three rescue dogs who have various issues. One is terrified of traffic and the other two aren’t comfortable around strangers and other dogs. It isn’t easy to find places to walk them at the best of times, never mind take them away on holiday.

The dogs had acres of private land that guests of the holiday cottage have the exclusive use of. This meant that we could totally relax and didn’t need to be on alert for someone coming around the corner or another dog appearing.

After our long walks, we could retire to a huge comfy sofa with the dogs curled up by the wood burner stove.

We’ve already booked for later in the year and can’t wait.

Specifically Recommend:

For people that want to take their dogs on holiday with them.

Definitely visit if you have dogs that you find difficult to take away because they are scared, or don’t always come back first time when you call!

Local Gems:

The local shop is a real hidden gem. Well stocked and friendly.

Summary:

“Wonderful, relaxing dog-centred holiday base with great local walks”

This is the best dog-friendly holiday we have ever found. All the surfaces in the Barn have been designed with wet and muddy paws as a possibility and are easy to wipe clean.

There are two small garden areas immediately adjacent to the Barn, and a range of secure paddocks just across the quiet road in front of the Barn for dogs to enjoy quality off-lead run arounds.

The welcome is warm, with home made flapjacks for the humans and doggie cookies for the dogs. There is even a holiday dog tag with the Barn’s address and emergency contact numbers on for your dog to wear whilst you are there (just in case they get lost in Brechfa Forest or the beach!)

Specifically Recommend:

You can pick up Wi-Fi from the main house if you sit upstairs in the bedroom window!

Also recommend leaving the curtains in the bedroom open at least one night as the view in the morning when you wake up is stunning.

Local Gems:

Pembrey Coastal Park. Glorious walks along the beach and in the parks woods.

Brechfa Forest, quiet well sign posted trails stunning scenery.

Black Lion Pub in Brechfa. Lovely food very reasonably priced and friendly staff.

Summary:

“Definitely somewhere you will want to return to”

Excellent converted barn full of character and well furnished.

Great location and nice to have an enclosed garden in the back for those last thing at night wees. The use of the owner’s field to walk the dogs in the morning was a lovely touch and the river was excellent for the dogs who love to swim and paddle.

The welcome pack for adults and dogs was gratefully received and the central location meant that we got the best of the Breacon Beacons one day, coast and seaside the next and forest walks and trails the next. We will definitely be returning.

Totally recommended for dog lovers.

Specifically Recommend:

The way in which everything that a dog owner might need had been thought of. Definitely the best place we have ever been for our dogs.

Local Gems:

Local pub sells excellent food and can sit outside in the evening with the dogs.

Welsh National cave centre was worth a visit.

Summary:

“Remote, quiet, relaxing....bliss !”

We lead busy working lives at home so this break was expected to be pure rest and it certainly was.

The Barn is modern with traditional old features. It is open, airy and the heating and log burner gives more than adequate warmth should you need it. Very well equipped for self-catering.

Extremely dog-friendly with bowls, dog wipes and ID tags included. So peaceful....pure bliss....am going to re-book soon.

Specifically Recommend:

The nearest shop is some distance so would recommend ordering Tesco home delivery before you arrive.

Be Aware:

No washing machine so you do need to pack accordingly.

No phone signal which is not a bad thing, nearest phone box about a mile away so if you need to call home make sure you have plenty of change as you are remote.

Local Gems:

We didn’t venture beyond the paddocks and river as we went for a rest but the back garden backs straight on to the Brechfa Forest, and the local village pub was highly recommended by many previous guests.

Plenty of information in the barn for places to visit.

En Route:

We travelled a long way so we only stopped at services for dogs to have a wander.

“Words cannot explain, you have to stay here to appreciate the area”

This is the best holiday we have had with regards to it being dog-friendly.

Jane has catered for the animals as well as us owners and the whole holiday was so relaxing, well we were both exhausted with the walks in the paddocks and Brechfa forest every day, but it was truly a wonderful holiday and will no doubt be back again. The added bonus was we had very good weather.

Specifically Recommend:

Just do and see as much as you can in the time you have here. You will not regret it.

Summary:

“The Best Truly Doggy Safe Holiday we have found to-date. Would recommend The Holiday in the Barn for the Best Relaxing and Peaceful Holiday ever”

Clean and tidy accommodation in a renovated barn in a most peaceful and beautiful setting. Just the birds to listen to in Brecfa Forest that runs behind the barn. The extra large bed has been missed since we’ve been home, and the view as you wake up across the valley. The owner, Jane, is extremely helpful prior to you visit.

Arrival at this wonderful place made all the better by some homemade flapjacks by Elaine, and the doggy treats too.

If you want a truly relaxing holiday for you and your dogs, this is it. We’ve been to lots of those places that say ’’holiday with your dogs in a secure garden’’, to be disappointed by the under-estimation of a dog’s ability to investigate thier surroundings! In The Barn we could relax knowing our dogs were safe in either the patio area or grass garden and also in the 22 acres of fenced paddocks for your sole use. Our dogs were so worn out running through the meadows, investigating the woods and paddling and swimming in the river which runs along the lower meadow.

Fishing was not great due to the low river and local fishermen said there hasn’t been many salmon in the Cothi for the last two years. (only one rainbow trout caught, that was too small and released)

Specifically Recommend:

Especially recommend this holiday if you have dogs, this is the place if you like to relax knowing your dogs are safe.

All hard flooring so easy to keep clean and not worry every minute that they are going to make a mess.

A very peaceful and secluded barn, garden and the 22 acres of fenced paddock, that I don’t think well ever be beaten.

Be Aware:

The Barn and the meadows are on steep gradients, so you need to be able to climb some steps both inside and outside the barn, also when accessing the meadows and to get the the river. Not for those without a very sure footing. Can also be very wet and muddy, if staying for two weeks as we did, bring plenty of clothes, shoes and socks or be prepared to handwash or find a laundrette as the barn has no washing machine. We would also recommend taking pair of slippers or warm socks as the lovely practical slate floor does chill your feet down even when we went in June.

Local Gems:

Only one mile down the road is a very friendly pub called The Black Lion. Very small so you need to book weekends and some evenings. Very good pub food at a good price.

Brecfa Community Shop, a few minutes away stocked well.

Brecfa forest on your doorstep.

Chocolate Farm only open in July and August as we found out after going there!

Pendine and Pembury beaches about 30 to 45 mins away.

“Comfortable and spacious and very dog-friendly”

The Barn is in a very remote setting, and was so peaceful and relaxing.

The Barn is very spacious both inside and out.

Everywhere was a car drive away but once we got to grips with the geography of the area, nothing seemed too far.

My dog loved the freedom of The Barn and was able to wander around safely.

The Barn is well-equipped with good quality stuff

Specifically Recommend:

Lovely forest at the back of the property and the large meadows that we can use are very dog-friendly.

The Barn is large and spacious and very comfortable.

Local Gems:

We liked Pembrey Country Park has a nice beach and has areas that are dog friendly.

We found the White Stag Inn and Brewery in Llanddarog and had a fantastic meal. Very welcoming and very friendly people.

Cardiff Bay is worth a visit - it’s about a 2 hour drive

En Route:

Most of our journey was done on the motorways, so we stopped off at the services. By the time we got into Wales we just wanted to find The Barn, so we didn’t really look for places to stop. It was a 6 hour car drive for us.

“A truly dog-friendly holiday, in a great location.”

The barn is in a truly beautiful location, it is totally private and brilliant for our three Jack Russells as the front garden is totally enclosed.

The paddocks are perfect for worry-free walking, enclosed, no livestock and the dogs raced around and had a ball.

We felt very at home and comfortable and that the dogs were welcome too treats and holiday dog tags a great idea.

The Barn is bright and spacious - the open plan makes it feel even bigger.

The bed is enormous and very comfortable.

We loved the log burner had some cosy nights in front of it.

“We have already booked another holiday here!!”

The Barn was perfect for both us and our dog - we have tried so many places that have promised secure gardens with a six foot gap in the fence, absolutely no livestock with cows in the back garden - you get the picture! This did everything it promised, completely enclosed and secure high fences and a beautiful, spotlessly clean house for us. It is set back from the main road so it is very quiet and we had our own fields to walk in and the forest on our doorstep.

Fully stocked kitchen with everything you might need and little extras like a picnic basket and rug for our use, even our dog had his own holiday tag in case he got lost!

Specifically Recommend:

Particularly suited for owners of sheep chasers, escape artists and other doggy challenges! Great to have your own fields to walk in, no problems with livestock or other dogs.

We did not have time to visit but apparently the pub 1-2 miles down the road is fantastic according to previous guests.

Be Aware:

There are steps up to the Barn and it is split level so not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues but I would recommend it to anyone else.

Local Gems:

We tend to go out of season so there wasn’t much open, sorry!

En Route:

Mostly motorway, but if you are in the area the Carlton Riverside in Llanwrtyd Wells does great food.

“Would return - perfect for a quiet get away with your dogs”

A lovely property, very quirky with modern touches. Great to have basic essentials - toilet roll, tea, sugar etc, even pooh bags for your dogs! and dog bowls and towels.

The location is great if you want tranquility, peace and quiet (no mobile network service), but you do need to go with plenty of food as the nearest supermarket is a good drive away. There is a small community shop with basics.

The Barn is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as there are steps leading up to The Barn and inside leading from the kitchen to the living area.

Great for dog owners as the paddocks are quite secure allowing your dogs to have a run, but be aware of livestock in other fields. I would say the property is more suited to couples.

Great for dog owners

“A dog-friendly haven suitable for humans too!”

We first saw The Barn mentioned in an article in Your Dog magazine, and it was the dog friendliness of it that appealed to us, and we were not disappointed. It really was excellent for our holiday needs, making sure it was stress-free with two dogs to cater for.

The location is ideal, lots of forest walks nearby and the beach only a short drive away, with Pembrey Beach a must. A visit to Bosherton is worth the 60 minute drive, with Broadhaven beach a little secluded bay. The Black Lion pub is also a must, excellent food, reasonable prices and welcoming landlord!

We have stayed in a number of dog friendly places all over the UK, and The Barn has to be one of the best, and true to its word! (This cannot be said of all cottages)

Specifically Recommend:

Dog friendliness without losing any of the high standards of cleanliness and facilities

Summary:

“The perfect place for a quiet getaway with your dog. Actually, it would be perfect even if you don’t have a dog! A beautiful barn in quiet, scenic surroundings”

We loved our time in The Barn - it was exactly what we wanted, and more than we hoped for.

Completely dog friendly - tiled floors, dog tag, bowls and towels all provided, two enclosed patio areas-gardens, plus about 6 paddocks with no livestock in, and direct entry to Brechfa Forest.

They even had dog mags, books and dog training DVDs! Also, if you’re a raw feeder, they’ve got a huge freezer, so you don’t have to worry about taking too much dog food!

The Barn itself is just beautiful inside, and incredibly comfortable. Facilities are all perfect - nothing was missing. It was also totally clean and not at all musty or damp, even at the end of the wettest year on record!

When we arrived (on New Year’s Eve), The Barn was lit up with fairy lights, and inside there was a glowing Christmas tree, a bottle of wine and homemade flapjacks for the humans, and a gourmet biscuit for the dog.

Brechfa Forest is GREAT- only issue in the summer could be the amount of cyclists, but there are lots of different paths and some are marked for cyclists or walkers only, so you can avoid the bikes.

The paddocks are lovely, but it was a bit too wet for us to take full advantage of them. In drier weather though they would be the perfect place to let the dog run to his heart’s content, with no worries about cars or sheep. The river was very fast last week, but even our water-loving Cocker Spaniel wasn’t interested with so much other land to explore.

This was the best dog friendly holiday we’ve had - we’ll be going again as soon as we can. The only downside is that you have to leave at the end!

Specifically Recommend:

Brechfa Forest - huge and beautiful, with loads of different paths to explore.

Local Gems:

The Black Lion - nearest pub, and really friendly. We were there for NYE, and everyone was lovely. Really nice food, too.

Summary:

“Love dogs, walks, scenery, peace and tranquility - The Barn delivers!”

Such a surprise. Everything we were hoping for plus a lot more!

We wanted a peaceful break away from the hustle and bustle of living in SE London and somewhere dog friendly. For all that it was paradise.

I have not enjoyed driving for years, but to drive 20 miles and come across two or three cars it was amazing.

So many walks and such different things to see everywhere. We loved it and the dog loved it.

There really has been a lot of effort put into making the barn and paddocks ideal for you and your dog(s). You have to go there to appreciate it.

Lovely evenings lounging around the log burner. We were lucky it was cold so we could use it.

Specifically Recommend:

Paddocks.
Log Burner - so cosy.
Walks, walks, walks.
Visit to Gwbert, Mwnt and New Quay. All close, so all in a day.

Local Gems:

Community shop.
Black Lion Pub.
Pembrey National Park and beach.
Forest walks.

En Route:

On the way to The Barn we visited the Gower Peninsular - Oxwich, Port Einon and Rhosilli. Beautiful.

“The ideal get-away with dogs”

A quiet and peaceful, tranquil location located in gentle rolling hills with views all around, where one can forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 22 acres of secure, well thought out paddocks for dogs and humans alike to enjoy.

Upon arrival you are greeted with a bottle of wine, flapjacks and even two pints of milk for that needed cup of tea.

The dogs are even thought of with doggies treats awaiting them, identity discs stating all The Barn information whilst on holiday, should they get lost.

Definitely a must for dog owners, where you can walk your dog and have a picnic in beautiful secure surroundings.

Great detail in everything to make your stay as happy and memorable as possible.

Summary:

“A true Dog Lovers’ Holiday!”

The Barn was just what we expected and more - wonderful views, clean and tidy inside and totally catered towards a holiday with your dog. The area around The Barn was beautiful with the added advantage of having your own land and paddocks on which to walk your dogs in total safety when off the lead.

All our requirements were met inside the property. The area is so quiet and relaxing and if raining there are plenty of DVDs, books etc to keep you occupied. Also there are an abundance of brochures of different areas to visit.

The gardens are very secure for your dogs and as well as your own paddocks to exercise your dogs there is direct access to the Forest behind the Barn.

Specifically Recommend:

The Black Lion pub, about a mile away, has wonderful home cooked food and very friendly staff. Dogs are allowed inside in the bar area. Booking of table advised as it does get busy.

Also I recommend Pembrey Country Park. The beach is outstanding and seems to go on forever!

Brechfa Forest surrounds The Barn and is great for dog walkers although there are alot of mountain bike riders on certain routes. The difficulty of the routes are explained at the entrance to the Forest.

Be Aware:

Be warned that there are steep stairs leading up to the property and stairs up to the bedroom.

Local Gems:

See above.
Pendine Sands is another beach which we have heard is worth a visit, but we unfortunately never got round to going there. Too much to see and do nearby!!

Summary:

“Dog friendly, dog safe, and delightful for humans too”

We booked a short break at The Barn purely on the strength of the reviews and recommendations we had read on the Rated Places website. We were not disappointed! Yes, The Barn is extremely dog-friendly (homemade dog treats upon arrival, dog drying towels, poo bags, dog holiday tags, bowls all provided), but perhaps more importantly it is dog SAFE.

The paddocks (across a road, but never had to wait for cars to pass) are an absolute boon giving private access to just you and your dogs (and maybe the odd angler) with no livestock to worry about and good fencing. Very thoughtfully the name of the paddock is signed on each gate you go through and there is a map in the cottage so you cannot accidentally wander onto someone else’s land. The paddocks run down to the river which is fenced in parts (shown on map) and this is probably the only place you need to take care, in case the river is flowing too fast for dogs during your visit. The garden is also completely dog-proof (unless your dog is likely to jump a five foot fence from a standing start!) and the patio area is useful to contain your dogs safely whilst you are treking backwards and forwards to the car packing or unpacking.

The Barn has been thoughtfully and tastefully furnished - more like the owners’ second home rather than a let. You get no sense of ’that will do’, more a sense that they picked out vintage, modern and antique pieces they liked and suited The Barn. The soft furnishings are all very good quality. The kitchen is smallish but perfectly adequate with every utensil you could possibly need, plus good quality crockery. Clear instructions on recycling and good, dog-proof bins.

Very deep window sills throughout mean there is always a surface for the clutter one tends to take on holiday (or at least we do!). The floor throughout is stone or tiled so dogs can do no damage to carpets or rugs. The bathroom is a masterclass in great use of space - with a good bath, modern, easy-to-use shower (lovely soft water), a tiny sink, a loo and a very nice chrome ladder heated towel rack. Absolutely bags of really hot water.

Up three steps from the kitchen to the main living area the focal point of which is a woodburning stove, large comfy leather sofa and armchairs and a good sized telly. There is a long settle and pine table making up an eating area between the kitchen and lounge. A door leads out to the side patio. Up four steep wooden open stairs to a mezzanine bedroom with HUGE double bed and some lovely little pieces of furniture - great bedside lights and little shelves for your morning mug of tea. Hanging rail and small wardrobe give ample hanging space and drawer space is capacious. Nice touches include all wooden coat hangers and an exceptionally good hairdryer. Limited headroom as you are up in the eaves, but the view from the window is well worth banging your head on the beams a few times!

The Barn is warm and cosy and quiet and most definitely dog AND human friendly. It was very clean and not only did it not smell at all of dogs (most guests seem to bring them judging by the Visitors Book), but neither did it smell of any type of synthetic air freshener (which is usually far worse than wet dog!).

Jane was away whilst we stayed but judging by all the comments made by other guests is an unobtrusive but extremely helpful host.

Specifically Recommend:

Eat at the Black Lion at Abergorlech - just over a mile away. Lovely little pub with very welcoming hosts. Good, varied, inexpensive menu and dogs welcome in bar. Booking recommended (probably essential Fri and Sat - closed Monday)

Be Aware:

Steep driveway to The Barn - take heed of Jane’s advice and LOOK before you commit, especially if you are not in a 4WD. Parking on a more level area is available too - just a few more steps to take!

The Barn is completely open plan so if your dog needs to be contained Jane can give you a crate to use.

The river can run very fast and whilst at most times of year is clearly fine for dogs to paddle and swim in, when we were there the river was flowing far too fast for dogs or fishing - due to the amount of rainfall.

Local Gems:

Drive up to Abergorlech (just past the pub) and park at the Forestry Commission for fabulous dog walks in the safety of the forest.

The local shop in Brechfa sells virtually everything and is run by volunteers who are all very friendly and helpful.

Take a drive out to Pembrey Country Park (about 45 mins drive) for fabulous beaches - part of which is dog-friendly all year round.

En Route:

The Mountain Centre at Libanus in Brecon - only a hour (max) from the cottage but worth stopping to let the dogs have a run and sample their great selection of tea and cake!

A little bit of heaven. I cannot praise the barn enough - warm, welcoming, everything has been thought of for your stay.

Paddocks were amazing and the local area is fantastic for walking without having to drive too far.

“Lovely hideout for a perfect relaxing holiday with dog”

If you’re looking for a hideout without mobile or internet coverage just to relax, have pleasant walks and lots of possibilities for your dog to play around, The Barn is the perfect place to stay.

Very well equipped with everything you need to cook for yourself, you can chose between preparing your own meal or go to the local pub (The Black Lion) which we recommend strongly as well.

I’d say, the best rating one can give about a place you’ve been on holiday is, when you want to come back again or you recommend it to friends. We do both!

“The perfect dog-friendly holiday venue!”

The Barn was, without doubt, the best holiday cottage I have ever stayed in.

The accommodation was clean with a well-equipped kitchen and lovely bathroom. The views were incredible, the perfect location for getting away from it all.

The owners had left a holiday collar tag for our dog and even a biscuit for her too. The dog paddocks are beyond belief - we were able to let our terrier off lead for the first time in 3-4 years in the safe, fully fenced (terrier proof) 22 acres!

The local pub is a half hour walk away along a beautiful country road and is well worth a visit too.

If you are looking for a quiet, picturesque, dog-friendly holiday then this is THE place to go!

“Perfect, as always”

Just back from our third visit to The Barn. Another totally relaxing holiday!! Once again our two Springers had a fantastic time roaming the safe paddocks. Only had to put them on leads whilst by the river as this was flowing a little faster than the last time we stayed.

Walked in the forest, ate at the Black Lion - excellent food. Community shop also very well stocked. This visit we did a lot more walking and some of the views from the very top of the forest were stunning. Dogs worn out on a daily basis which is difficult to do with Springer Spaniels!

Perfect for walkers and dogs alike. We will be having another holiday here.

In The Barn there was everything we needed and more. It was secure and the gardens were safe for our two dogs. The Barn had fantastic views, also it has dog-friendly paddocks which were well fenced in, and at the bottom of the paddocks was a river.

“A perfect paradise for dogs and their owners!”

The Barn was everything we’d hoped for! The website photos can’t show just how cosy and inviting the place is.

The little doggie extras and bottle of wine with flapjacks made us feel very welcome. Very quiet and private location with just the sound of birdsong from the forest.

First place we’ve visited that was completely dog-escape-proof, so we could relax with doors open knowing dogs were safe.

We will definitely be coming back!

Specifically Recommend:

Other reviews mention the steep steps up to the Barn, however, our 16 year old German Shepherd managed to climb up and down them everyday so please don’t be put off by them

Local Gems:

We would strongly recommend the Community shop in Brechfa, it had everything we needed including soya milk and vegetarian food and nice wines. We could have done our whole week shop there and would have done if we’d known it stocked such good quality products and nice to support the local community.

Pembrey Country Park and beach is fantastic and not that far away and has beaches for dogs to run on.

“Best dog-friendly accommodation we’ve ever stayed in and we’ll be back! ”

Always a challenge to find a cottage that takes three big dogs....not so here. This is the ultimate dog-friendly accommodation.

The owners have thought of everything for a stress-free holiday with our three greyhounds, one of whom seldom goes off-lead. He thought it was holiday heaven in the paddocks.

Very comfy for the humans too. Peaceful, relaxing, and fab view from bed. All mod cons and little extras provided for the dogs - they loved the all natural dog biscuits.

Plenty of walks locally and coast close by for day trips.

Specifically Recommend:

The paddocks - some wooded, some meadow, one by the river - all safely enclosed. Picnic tables and benches to sit and enjoy the fresh air.

Mezzanine bedroom was good as the dogs knew we were there but weren’t shut away downstairs like in other cottages (which usually means they wake at the crack of dawn.) That combined with lots of exercise meant we all slept really well.

Be Aware:

Only one thing to be aware of, lots of steps up to the cottage and some inside too, so would be difficult for dogs or humans with mobility problems.

Local Gems:

Pembrey Country Park for beach.

Laugharne and footpath following the estuary and Dylan Thomas boathouse museum

The walk from the Brechfa Forest car park in Abergorlech following the stream and looping back is a nice walk while waiting for the Black Lion to open

“A haven for dogs and kids while catering for adults”

The property is in a quiet location but close to amenities. It is furnished to an excellent standard but functional rather than fancy, making it ideal for any holiday involving dogs and children.

Extremely dog-friendly with small enclosed outside area on either side of property but five acres (See Owner’s Note please)of enclosed fields just across the road meaning kids and canines can let off steam, equalling a relaxing holiday for all.

Perfect.

Specifically Recommend:

Skimming stones by the river

Collecting wood from Brechfa Forest for wood burning stove

Picnics in the fields - no need to travel further than just across the road.

Local Gems:

Brechfa Forest - lots of walks.

Talley Abbey - not far away but with good walks.

En Route:

Hereford - fabulous small town with amazing cathedral and excellent facilities.

“Amazing dog-friendly accommodation”

We have just returned from spending New Year’s Eve at The barn and all I can say is ’’Wow’’.

Set in an idyllic location, The Barn is a charming place to unwind. We loved the log burner and the dogs enjoyed walking through the paddocks. We all soon felt very much at home and could hardly bear to leave when it came to the end of our stay. We will definitely be returning soon.

Thank you for the doggy gifts that you left - The Barn really is the best dog-friendly accommodation we have stayed at.

Also would just like to mention that Jane was a perfect host and although could not be there to meet us, she really made sure we had everything we needed and we were well informed ahead of our stay. Excellent communication.

“Fantastic Barn, perfect getaway, dog friendly!”

Fantastic place! We stayed here for a week over Christmas and right from the initial booking through to leaving, the experience was flawless. The owner has certainly put in some great thought toward making you feel at home.

The barn is ideal for any couple or small family looking for a quiet get away. There is plenty to do in the area (amazing walks, mountain biking, castles, beaches, shopping, whatever you want!). The owner also has OS maps, leaflets and books for a range of activities in The Barn which was very handy.

We had our two small dogs with us and the owner has clearly focused her efforts on dog friendliness - water bowls, treats, poo bags, towels, etc were all provided.

We were also able to get WiFi internet access from the owner’s main house next door in some parts of the Barn which was an added bonus!

So to summarise, if you are looking for cosy, relaxing accommodation with lots to do in the area then you have to go to The Barn!

“Excellent”

The Barn is clean, comfortable, warm and cosy and is totally dog-friendly.

We were welcomed with a bottle of wine and homemade flapjacks and there were treats for the dogs as well as dog tags for them in case they got lost.

There are five or six paddocks and a wood to run the dogs in and as it is private property the dogs are able to run free in the enclosed paddocks.

The owner has also spent a lot of time putting brochures together re places of interest, lots of maps and a brilliant folder relating to things to know.

An excellent relaxing holiday to be had in a perfect place. Highly recommend.

“Total relaxation and fun for dogs”

Another fantastic break for us and our two dogs. This time we stayed for seven nights, but still not long enough really in this wonderful place.

Did more walking in the forest this time, with the weather very mild for November. Even sat in the Black Lion garden overlooking the river after an enjoyable walk!

We explored a few beaches, the walk from Wiseman’s Bridge to Saundersfoot was well worth it even though a little short.

We cannot speak highly enough of The Barn. Looking forward to another great holiday next year.

“Fabulous break for dogs and humans alike!”

We have now stayed at The Barn on three occasions, two weekends and once for a full week. It caters for humans and dogs alike. Plenty of areas to walk, only minutes away from The Barn in Brechfa. The owners also have fields with a river and a short woodland walk open to all who stay.

We also visited Pembrey Country Park a 35 min drive away, which the dogs love, has beach and woodland. Open to dogs in off-peak season.

We dined at The Black Horse in Abergorlech who also welcome dogs. The local shop is just down the road or if a big shop is needed the supermarkets are only 20 mins drive away.

If peace and quiet with your dogs is needed The Barn is the place for you. Even little extras like special dog tags, rub downs and dog bowls are provided.

We will be staying again and recommend The Barn to everyone! With dogs or not, this is truly a beautiful place to stay with fantastic scenery and walks galore!

Specifically Recommend:

Bring your doggies’ bedding etc.

“Perfection. A true place to relax, especially if you want to get away from a hectic lifestyle”

The website gave a fairly accurate impression of what to expect, but the experience exceeded our expectations.

A wonderful welcome, wine, flowers and homemade cakes. Beautiful views all around the property, especially from the bedroom window. Easy access into the Brechfa forest for walking.

A lot of thought has been put into the design of the property and those taking their dogs on holiday. A truly dog-friendly place that had thought of everything, including ’dogs on holiday’ collar tags, dog treats and bowls. Exclusive use of safe, enclosed paddocks for us and our dogs to enjoy, including strategically placed seating to enjoy the views.

The property was spotlessly clean, very comfortable with everything you needed to ensure your enjoyment.

We will be returning and have recommended it to our friends, especially those with dogs.

Specifically Recommend:

Walk in the Brechfa Forest.

Take a drink and sit on the bench in Charlie’s Paddock and enjoy the river running by.

The large comfortable bed with views of farmland and forest. Waking early in the mornings listening to the birds singing.

Summary:

“Peaceful location, rather remote but with good road links to amenities - ideal for dog owners, walkers and bikers.”

Very comfortable, well-equipped, clean accommodation with lots of useful information about the local area. Best for couples and dog-owners, including keen walkers and mountain bikers.

Although the property fronts on to a road, it is set back and the road is quiet. The owner has gone to a lot of trouble to make the property dog-friendly, including thoughtful details such as providing a collar tag for the dog with the property owner’s address on it.

The Barn has use of several secure fenced paddocks belonging to the owner located on the other side of the road leading down to a quiet river. Splendid for exercising a large dog or two.

A good holiday for those wanting a peaceful location in attractive countryside. The nearest village shop is three miles away, although there’s an excellent pub that’s closer. Coast is about 50 mins drive, but worth the trip.

The owner is friendly and welcoming.

Specifically Recommend:

Visit to Llandeilo and to the National Trust property at Dinefwr Park and Black Mountains nearby.

Visit to the coast at Laugharne and nearby Pendine Sands, also Pembrey Country Park.

Closer to the property, we recommend Brechfa and Abergorlech for walking and the Black Lion pub in Abergorlech for good value food and a warm welcome.

All as mentioned in Specifically Recommended section above.

“Why would you holiday anywhere else”

What can I say...... This was our second stay in The Barn and certainly won’t be our last and it is for that reason that I’m writing another review.

The welcome we recieve is always friendly, and the complimentary bottle of wine and flapjack and doggie treats are generous and unexpected touches.

When we visited in April we were impressed by The Barn’s cleanliness and even though countless wet and muddy dogs will have visited since, the standard hasn’t dropped.

Exclusive use of the well fenced and therefore safe paddocks is a major bonus and means a worry-free walk is literally just across the road.

Until our first stay we always had to place our dogs in kennels which proves expensive for us and stressful for the dogs, The Barn makes this unnecessary and therefore excellent value.

“Don’t just take my word for it, book up for a stay!”

The Barn is perfectly set up for a relaxing break. Dogs welcome means exactly that, a safe and secure garden and patio with great walks within the Brechfa forest and adjacent secure meadows.

The accommodation is spotlessly clean (and easy to maintain that way), well equipped, spacious and comfortable with everything you need to cater for yourself including clear and straightforward instructions for everything from the hot water system and log-burning stoves, to waste disposal and recycling. A special touch being dog tags with The Barn’s contact details for use during your stay, dog towels and a non-spill water bowl (and some buscuits thrown in!).

Because of its situation The Barn is ideally placed for walking and exploring the wonderful countryside . The Southern coast e.g. Pendine Sands is around 50 mins drive and Western coast a little less. The Barn has plenty of information about events and places to visit in the Carmarthen area, the local shop in Brechfa has all the supplies you should need and the towns of Llandeilo and Llandovery are a short drive.

The local pub, the Black Lion in Abergorlech, is friendly, has great food and is very close to one of the Brechfa forest entrances. All in all The Barn met and then exceeded our expectations.

This is a really lovely property and the bed was so comfortable. We arranged for a Tesco delivery for an hour after we got here, which was great. Dog bowls are provided, and local dog tags, which was a really nice touch.

The area is beautiful, the paddocks were fantastic for walking the dogs. We visited some local beaches which were all dog-friendly, which was a really welcome surprise.

All in all, a wonderful break, in fact so good that we have booked for next year already!

So nice to find such lovely accommodation that takes 2 dogs.

“The Barn takes a lot of beating!”

The Barn exceeded our expectations. We have stayed at many dog-friendly cottages over the years and have accepted that the decor and furnishing may be a little tatty. However, The Barn was the exception - comfortably furnished and very well equipped, even down to a dog tag with contact details in case visiting dogs got lost!

The views from The Barn and paddocks were stunning and there was lots to do in the surrounding area, including seven miles of beach at Pendine (Herbie loved it!!)

“The most welcoming cottage we’ve ever stayed in”

The property exceeded all our expectations. Set in very quiet glorious countryside and woodland, ideal for walkers and bikers and those who wish to explore places of interest.

The Barn is eco-friendly, had everything we could wish for and much thought had been given to every detail. It is particularly suited to dog owners with secure fencing to the garden and access to large secure paddocks. The dogs also have a much appreciated welcome pack.

We entertained four visitors over an afternoon and evening and a dog (A Bernese!) We were not crowded, the kitchen was well equipped, the lounge had enough seating and 22 acres was enough to walk, talk and (for the dogs) play in.

Jane gets the balance right - being available but also leaving us to get on with our break. She made helpful recommendations for places to eat and ensured we were comfortable.

Specifically Recommend:

Settle down for a very relaxing break. OK, there are long walks and bike rides on your doorstep if you really want to get out there, but this place is made for peace, quiet and a good book.

Local Gems:

Not many shops in the area but do make your way to the community shop in Brechfa - local people with time to chat and make recommendations. Reasonably well stocked, including a selection of wines.

“WOW what Bliss for both humans and dogs,”

WOW!! Jane has thought of everything and more to make The Barn a completely rexlaxing break away from mobile phones, laptops!! Bliss.

The little touches were appreciated, Dog Tags, Picnic Blanket and Basket, Bottle of wine on arrival.

The local shop was very well stocked. We found an excellent farm shop at Cross Hands.

Our two Springer Spaniels really enjoyed the paddocks. We were stress-free knowing they were secure. (They have a habit of diving into the undergrowth regardless!!)

An excellent choice for a relaxing break for yourselves and your dogs.

We will be back.

Summary:

“A refreshing, restful but active stay at The Barn, Brechfa, 16th - 20th May 2011”

The attractive property is maintained to a high standard, is clean, comfortable and well equipped. It is well fenced in so that the dogs are completely safe. The Barn is peaceful, quiet and private. We were not bothered at all & no-one overlooked us.

It is located within an easy drive of Carmarthen (c22 miles) and the local villages for everyday shopping. Llandeilo is a short drive away (c19 miles) it is an attractive market town with interesting little shops.

Opposite the property are the hills of the Cothi valley and paddocks owned by the Barn owners, where dogs can be exercised safely. Because of lambing we were restricted for entrance to the Brechfa Forest via the back exit at the Barn, but other entrances are just up the road in either direction. (Brechfa & Abergorlech) The forest is lovely for the dogs.

Pembrey Country Park is about 24 miles away. This is ideal for dogs and children, with long sandy beaches, sand dunes, areas of trees, toilet facilities and a cafe-restaurant, serving nicely cooked food. The beach cafe is presumably open on busy days - not when we visited (Thursday). There is drinking water available, a children’s playground and a visitors’ centre. The humans’ beach is patrolled by Life Guards during the summer.

There is a dog & human-friendly pub in Abergorlech & a local produce shop in Brechfa, both up the road. We went to FerrySide on the Towy Estuary, which the dogs loved. The place smelled beautifully of crabs and shrimps, but there were a few outlets into the estuary, visible with the tide out, which may have been sewage and the dogs slopped in some dubious-looking muddy parts! However, they didn’t smell too badly and Jane at the Barn provided a hose for sluicing down!

The Barn met our expectations in allowing us to enjoy River, Estuary, Forest, Hills, Walking and Seaside. This holiday for us was all about the dogs.

Welcome extras - address tags for use by the dogs, loan of dog beds and towels, a great view from the bed across the valley, gossip in the pub, a welcome pack from Jane. A very helpful info file and postcards on the dresser. House Martins feeding their young under the eaves above the bedroom. Lots of birdsong.

Particularly suited for couples with or without pets & up to 2 children (our opinion). Doubtful about suitability for people with mobility problems the stairs are steep and widely spaced. The paddocks slope steeply. The beams upstairs are low and a bump on the head can be expected for the unwary!

“Beautiful location, clean and comfortable, very dog friendly, we will be back!”

What a wonderful place! We will definitely be back. Every need was catered for - both doggy and human!

Started with a bowl of water poured by Jane for the girls and a homemade doggy treat each, and a welcome gift of a bottle of wine and some delicious Welsh cakes for us. Loved the holiday dog tags - what a great idea!

The Barn was clean and comfortable and very homely in the evenings when we lit the wood-burning stove (initial supply of logs were provided) Super-king size bed was very comfy and outside patio area was a lovely place to sit. It was reassuring to know that the garden was well fenced in so no disappearing dogs!

The paddocks...what can I say... Perfect for our girls to stretch their legs and investigate while still safely enclosed. They loved sniffing about in the forest and we couldn’t get them out of the river! The hose provided was perfect for giving them a wash when we got back.

A perfectly perfect relaxing break in a beautiful location. I would recommend this to all dog owners!

Summary:

“Excellent attention to detail.”

The great first impression of the barn was reinforced time and again during our short stay there. The place is full of character, the setting in the Cothi Valley is stunning and quiet and even if we hadn’t been blessed with brilliant weather our stay would have been superb.

The garden and patio area are completely fenced so we had complete peace of mind that our dogs were safe. The paddocks and river opposite were free of litter and dog fouling and just added that extra something....in fact our dogs seem to be disappointed to be home again!

Even though The Barn is aimed specifically at dog owners you would be hard pressed to tell that other dogs had ever been, it was very clean.

Jane’s idea of providing a tag with The Barn’s contact details for each holidaying pooch was an unexpected touch from someone who understands her customers’ needs more than most (She was also understanding when Sid lost his playing in the river!).

We will certainly rebook for later in the year.

Specifically Recommend:

An early morning walk down by the river.

The Black Lion Pub in nearby Abergorlech, serves hearty portions of home-cooked and locally sourced food in a very friendly atmosphere.

Summary:

“Excellent holiday - we want to live there!!!”

The barn was probably the best UK based holiday we have ever been on!

The accommodation was excellent, very open planned and included all mod cons. There was great central heating and a wood-burning stove. Everything you might need is provided including holiday dog tags, milk, some firewood, kindling, fire lighters and tea bags.

We were also impressed with the selection of magazines, books and DVDs that were provided for guests’ use. There was also a great deal of helpful information on all the activities the surrounding area offers. These were provided in folders and included maps etc!

The 22 acre paddocks provided excellent space for the dogs to have a run and they loved going into the river for a dip! We also took them up into the forest behind the barn for a walk which they loved! There are lots of Red Kites about and one likes to circle around near the barn!

There is use of two fishing permits for the River that bounds the property (season begins in April so we missed out) and the angling club that provide them are very helpful!

We took a few trips locally to beaches and to a few small villages (Heavenly chocolate-ice cream shop is highly recommended). Carmarthen is close and it has all the usual shops (Tesco will deliver to the cottage if need be). The local pub (Black Lion) is excellent - dog friendly and great food. The owner and his wife were very welcoming and she cooks all the food, including lots of vegetarian options!

Wi-Fi was available from the main house but you’ll need to sit at the kitchen window to get a signal (or outside on the bench). This was ok for us as we wanted a bit of a rest from the office! Mobile reception in the area isn’t great, apparently Vodafone is the best.

Overall it really could not have been better, accommodation, owner, land, river, forest, pub, local activities all turned out excellent....if only we could live there!

The Black Lion is our fantastic local, just 1 mile from The Barn. Great food and a warm welcome is always assured.

Heavenly is in Llandeilo (approx. 19 miles away) it has an amazing selection of cakes, chocolate and ice cream which are all handmade. It is definitely worth a visit and Llandeilo itself has lots of interesting shops and eateries - Jane, The Barn

“Couldn’t fault it!”

The location is superb. Incredibly peaceful and secluded whilst being only minutes away from wonderful walking, amazing mountain bike trails and a friendly pub serving good food.

The accommodation could not be better geared towards dog owners. The barn is stylish and very cosy, yet manages to be completely practical for the mutts as well. Gorgeous flagstone floors mean that there are no carpets to worry about when the dogs wander in from either of the adjoining, fully secure garden areas.

Within a few steps are several secure paddocks in which to walk the dogs, plus the river for them to play in if the current’s not too strong. It was abundantly clear that dogs here are not just permitted, but are very much a priority when consideration was being given to providing a dog-friendly experience.

Unfortunately, we never made it to any of the beaches (that’s for next time), but the forest walks are breathtaking, numerous and close. We were lucky enough to have plenty of sunshine to cap it all off!

We had a wonderful time and recommend it without hesitation.

“Utter peace for humans and great for dogs”

The Barn was most comfortable, very secure for dogs, and ideally located between two coastlines. It was utter peace.

There were little touches like a bottle of wine and Welsh cakes on arrival, and dog tags with the Barn’s details in case a dog got lost! So magic for dogs, with their own paddocks for exercise.

The barn is very well kitted out with everything needed, including books, games, etc. and the view from the bedroom window of the valley and hill beyond was wonderful, with the sun rising in the morning.

Owner’s Reply:

Really pleased you had such a relaxing holiday. There are a lot of great dog-friendly beaches worth a visit, many allow dogs on all or sections of the beach all year round. You visited Pembrey (Cefn Sidan) that has 6 miles of dog-friendly beach all year round and Llangrannog, which has a section that remains open to dogs in the peak season between May and September

“Would definitely love to return here for longer next time. The Places to Visit book in the barn had great suggestions and would love to tour around a bit more, but this particular wend was purely for mountain biking”

We had a fantastic weekend staying at the barn. Extremely homely accommodation, a welcome tray awaiting us on arrival with home-made biscuits (and also some for the dog).

Also, would like to say that despite this being accommodation for dogs, it definitely didn’t smell doggy and neither was there a dog hair to be seen.

Jane made us very welcome, recommended the local pub for dinner (which we made good use of).

“Dog-friendly, lovely walks, gorgeous views, friendly hosts, we couldn’t have asked for more”

Many properties say they are dog-friendly but few truly are. This one was - and then some!

Very welcoming but unintrusive hosts, great walks for the dogs, wonderful views and wildlife. It is everything we hoped for and more.

We intend to go back as often as we possibly can to recharge our batteries for city living. Thank you!

Specifically Recommend:

For being dog-friendly - the garden area was fully enclosed, as were their padocks to let your dogs run free.

Walking by the river was gorgeous though we were warned to watch how fast the river was flowing - everything was done to ensure we had a lovely stay.

“A truly special place - you will keep coming back!”

We had an amazing time, The Barn offers everything we were looking for - tranquillity, comfort, amazing walks on a doorstep and diversity for activities.

The Barn is located really well for various trips - in a short time you can get to dog-friendly beaches, go shopping to lovely little towns, go cycling, hiking or exploring history.

The accommodation offers everything you can think of, it is like a home away from home and, for some, even more luxurious than own home.
