“ Prepare to be WOWed”

Oak Cottage is absolutely the best holiday accommodation we have ever been lucky enough to stay in. So quiet and yet only a short drive away from shops, pubs, cafs, beaches etc...

Everything you can think of is in the cottage. Each time I thought ’I bet they don’t have.......’ Erm.... Oh yes they did!

The garden is fabulous and our three Jack Russells loved it, so much space to explore and run around. It is totally safe and secure which was very relaxing for us.

Anything you need or want to ask, Gail, the owner, is only a phone call away and so helpful.

We had some lovely welcome treats and so did the dogs. The downstairs bedroom was perfect for my Mum who can no longer manage stairs, a bathroom right next door with a walk-in shower too.

We were in someone else’s house but felt totally at home.

We cannot wait to go back

Specifically Recommend:

Book early, it’s very popular.

Local walks around pretty East Ruston.

Local Springfield Kennels, in the village, if you want a doggy-free day. Day boarding is welcomed and Ellie is lovely. Felt more than happy leaving ours there.

“A real home-from-home and hidden gem, we have already been discussing when we can visit next!”

Our expectations were exceeded staying at Oak Cottage - from the delicious welcome basket and helpful hosts, to the friendly locals and brilliant facilities at the cottage, we couldn’t fault anything.

The holiday allowed us to truly rest and relax in the beautiful and quiet rural surroundings. We were lucky with an early heatwave and the secured garden provided a great space for the dogs to let off steam.

We were pleasantly surprised with the hidden extras on offer - a BBQ (which we made great use of in the sunny weather), garden loungers, bikes in the shed and even a skipping rope - hilarious fun for a group of adults!

Beaches, sleepy lanes for bike rides, adventurous dog walks and proper pub grub are all on the doorstep.

A real home-from-home and hidden gem, we have already been discussing when we can visit next!

“A perfect cottage for a country getaway near the sea, ideal for dogs”

The cottage was perfect for our holiday. It was in a rural setting but not too far from the sea, which suited us completely. Inside every need had been catered for, and whilst there was plenty of space, the cottage had a cosy feel about it. It is so easy to make yourself at home here.

The beds were huge, and comfy, and yet the bedrooms retained a cottagey feel. The lounge has two comfy sofas and huge TV and on the chilly nights we made use of the log fire. We loved the cakes and biscuits that were left for us and our dog. With milk and tea and coffee we were able to settle in immediately. We even made an online shop before arriving and this had all been put away for us.

We would recommend this holiday to anybody and everybody. Our family were perfectly at home here, but there is plenty of room for extended family too. Dogs are so well catered for with beds and bowls and toys and blankets. The downstairs bedrooms were a bonus as along with the downstairs toilet and would suit anyone unable to use stairs. This holiday was perfect!

Specifically Recommend:

Anybody with dogs will love it here. Our Sheltie is extremely well behaved, but most cottages don’t allow dogs to be left alone in a property. It was lovely to be allowed to leave her for an hour or so whilst we went out for a meal or visited places that don’t allow dogs.

“Lovely, comfortable family home with a very helpful, friendly owner ”

We visited the area to attend a special wedding. There were three generations sharing the house from Australia. The house was super for all of us and we really enjoyed our stay.

It was very well-equipped to meet everyone’s needs and the owner Gail, was sensational. She baked lovely goodies for us when we arrived and even helped out by minding some of the children when the reception was held. Great house for families!

’’Thanks for such a lovely review of Oak Cottage, and I am so thrilled you all had a great time at the wedding. Even though your time was short in Norfolk, you certainly made the most of your time - the Vicarage Gardens and The Star Inn are two lovely local places well worth the visit.

I had a lovely time babysitting the boys, playing football in the garden and being instructed in the finer points of lots of sports - very knowledgeable children who were wonderfully articulate and a joy to be with. I hope you might come back to Norfolk for another visit soon. Best wishes’’ - Gail

Summary:

“Well appointed, spacious, comfortable, dog-friendly - and with an owner who clearly enjoys welcoming guests”

First pleasant surprise on arrival - welcome pack including scones, carrot cake, white wine chilling in the fridge, and even home-made dog biscuits!

The house is large, comfortable and well laid out, with a decent garden which is safe and securely fenced so that children and dog could play freely.

The village of East Ruston is quiet and relatively free of traffic, while also being within easy reach of main roads and local amenities.

While none of the fixtures or items of furniture appeared to be particularly new, all were of good quality and in good condition.

Specifically Recommend:

The house’ USP appears to be dog-friendliness.

Be Aware:

Even boiler trouble halfway through our stay didn’t spoil our enjoyment - owner Gail was on the case immediately and a friendly and efficient local plumber had it fixed within 36 hours.

Local Gems:

One rainy day spent at North Norfolk heritage railway, Sheringham - interesting and enjoyable.

Bewilderwood - fun for children of all ages, including old ones like me!

Blakeney seal boat trip fairly pricey at 10GBP per head but has to be experienced.

My grandchildren loved the free entertainment at the Lighthouse pub nearby.

En Route:

Outward journey - Framlingham Castle and restored windmill nearby.

“Fantastic dog-friendly cottage in wonderful location, had everything we wanted and needed”

Very nice and comfortable cottage.

The large, secure garden, proximity of dog-friendly beaches and wonderful rural walks on the doorstep made this an ideal location for us and our three dogs to have a great holiday.

Although dog-friendly the house was in excellent order and would equally suit families or a larger group including those wanting downstairs accommodation, having two bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor.

The best equipped house we have stayed in and the homebaked goodies in the welcome pack from the owner were a lovely extra.

Would highly recommend

Lovely house with such a welcoming and helpful owner and the flexibility of the beds made it particularly helpful for us as we need single rather than double beds.

’’Hi Pam, so happy to hear you all had a lovely time and thank you so much for the lovely review. I really do love looking after our guests and I know how nice it is to have some lovely goodies waiting after a long journey.

There are so many super walks locally, often where you can let the dogs off the leads and let them roam about to their heart’s content. Keeping the dogs secure in the garden is really important so I’m really glad that this was useful for you.

The Butchers Arms couldn’t be nearer, could it It’s lovely to have a pub right at the end of the road. I LOVE the Vicarage Gardens - such a great place to see how all the plants change over the course of the year.

“Peace and relaxation in country comfort ....guaranteed”

This just simply ticked all the boxes - you just felt at home and relaxed here, quite amazing. We spent Christmas here and it was superb.

The owners went the extra mile and left treats for the dogs and some alcohol for the others! You really feel that this is a holiday home and not a property rented out for holidays.

The new log burner made us want for cold days, which we got, and it just made the atmosphere even more relaxed We miss the house already and so do the dogs who enjoyed the freedom of the house and garden - a rarity in today’s holiday market

If you want comfort in a quiet location this simply has to be it

Specifically Recommend:

There are some really nice walks around East Ruston itself, but put the dogs in the car and go to Happisburgh or Sea Palling beaches great for both man and dog

Cawdrowns the Butchers in Stalham is fantastic, they have a hot counter and the breakfast rolls are perfect

The Butchers Arms is literally 2 mins walk from the cottage and has cheap, good and plentiful food, but our favourite was the Hill House in Happisburgh, full of locals with character and very friendly and great beer too!

Local Gems:

Hill House at Happisburgh

Butchers Arms at East Ruston Star at Lessingham

All good and dog-friendly

’’Thank you Simon for a lovely long review of Oak Cottage. So pleased you enjoyed your Christmas at the house it really is a very relaxing home from home and I know Gail’s home baked goodies would have been impressive! The new log burner is proving a great hit (Gail is always reviewing what the house needs to make sure it suits as many guests as possible) so I am glad you were able to enjoy it’’ - Sue

“Fabulous dog- & child-friendly comfortable, clean cottage”

We had a fabulous time at Oak Cottage. We were two couples and five dogs. The Cottage is very dog-friendly and very clean. There was a welcome basket full of scones, bread and home made doggy biscuits.

The garden was fully enclosed ideal for dogs. There was also wine in the fridge for us humans.

This place would suit all, dogs, kids and people with mobility issues. Fabulous place and surrounding areas.

Specifically Recommend:

Lovely area for dogs walks, Local pub very friendly - have toys for kids and treats for dogs. Can have a meal with your dogs.

Local produce for sale at very reasonable prices people tend to use honesty boxes.

Lovely beaches close by

Local Gems:

Loads of interesting places to visit whether it be country side, beaches or woods. Also lots of dog-friendly pubs.

’’ Delightedyou enjoyed your stay at Oak Cottage and found it to be so adaptable and family and dog friendly. It’s a great place for a family booking or group but just as good for a smaller group (or for those with limited mobility) with two of the bedrooms and a shower room being on the ground floor. Glad you were able to get out and about to enjoy all the nearby interesting places as you say, the house is well located for some great days out and well equipped for when you are in it!’’Sue

A very comfortable property with all you need for a great holiday. The beds are large, adaptable and comfy. The garden is large and secure, very dog-friendly.

An ideal location for touring Norfolk. Very close to the Broads and the sandy North Norfolk beaches. Or the bright lights of Great Yarmouth. This property will not disappoint in location or amenities.

“Beautiful, comfy beds and sofas, dog-friendly cottage with a very safe garden”

Beautiful cottage with comfy sofas and beds, ideal for a large family. Very dog-friendly - large, safe garden, dog beds, bowls, toys and extra throws.

The owners have thought of everything with a delicious welcome pack of homemade goodies, wine, flowers and even a jar of homemade dog treats!

There are two downstairs bedrooms so would be ideal for the less mobile guests. Very quiet location but only a 10 minute drive to nearby beaches, shops, woods, etc.

Highly recommended.

A very comfortable and homely cottage-house set on the edge of a quiet and friendly village, close to some fantastic beaches.

Very suitable for dogs with a great large, secure garden, and clay tiles in the kitchen areas. Lovely quality of fittings, sofas and beds very comfy, lots of throws available and even dog beds were provided.

Fantastic welcome pack for both adults and dogs made you feel all guest are really welcome.

Specifically Recommend:

With a bathroom and two bedrooms downstairs it would suit those with limited mobility

Local Gems:

Winterton on Sea for beaches and dunes and the Dune Caf for cakes and butties.

Owner’s Reply:

’’A great review thank you Lynne, I feel we will be getting many more for this house which hasn’t been available for holidays for long but is already impressing guests with the comfort, space and genuinely dog friendliness. I think all the reviews also mention the fabulous welcome pack that Gail, the owner, leaves she is a demon baker and loves to treat her guests. Glad you enjoyed the beach at Winterton, one of the best in an area of many, sandy dog friendly beaches and the butchers in Stalham, that you also like, do a huge selection of things including hot meat rolls at lunchtime and dog bones!’’ - Sue

Summary:

“Fantastic dog-friendly cottage with superb facilities in a wonderful location”

Fantastic cottage, very spacious and comfortable. As only two of us we only used the downstairs two bedrooms and it was very well equipped and user-friendly. Warm and cosy at night with a great roaring fire! Dogs thoroughly enjoyed it and relaxed at night on the sofas.

We found it very close to Stalham with all the shops and takeaways etc that you could want. Sea Palling is one of the best beaches for dogs we have ever been to and only 10 minutes’ drive away. Charity car park for GBP1 all day then a 3 minute walk to the beach where the dogs ran themselves silly for hours every day. The reefs make it a safer area of sea as the waves and current are diluted. Dog-friendly cafe and pub-restaurant right at the beach entrance. No problem taking sopping wet and sandy dogs inside and letting them sit on the carpets!

Some great inland walks around the area such as the woods at Bacton. We also explored around Hickling and Barton broads but found the beach and woods the best for dogs. The cottage provided a wonderful base and was superb for both dogs and humans. Safe secure dog-proof garden and very quiet location. Would recommend to anyone and already have done!

Specifically Recommend:

Would recommend to dog owners and anyone with limited mobility as two large double rooms on ground floor and a wet room.

Safe, dog-proof garden.

Close to amenities but quiet location.

Best dog beach 10 minutes away with cafes etc. which dogs can go inside.

Local Gems:

The beach at sea palling is superb for dogs with 9 reefs diluting the effect of the current and waves somewhat and creating sort of pools which seem a little safer for dogs to swim in than the full-on sea. Great expanse of golden sand and plenty of room to feel like you have the beach to yourself even when around 30 other dogs there! Dog-friendLy caf and pub right by the beach and toilets too. There is a charity car park on the right as you approach the beach which is GBP1 for all day and the money this year goes to the homeless but changes each year.

Bacton Woods close by is superb with ample parking and wide all ability trails with many smaller paths snaking off all over the woods. Lots of deer and rabbits so be careful if your dog is a chaser.

There’s a Chinese takeaway, Indian takeaway and chip shop in Stalham 10 minutes’ away and a Tesco for all your needs with a petrol station. There are several pubs too. The butchers Arms pub is just a few yards from the cottage at the end of the lane.

“Great house in a relaxing location”

Oak Cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable relaxing holiday. On a lovely quiet lane with a pub a few minutes’ walk away. The welcome pack was better than ever expected, homemade scones, jam, cake, wine and doggy biscuits for the pooches.

We wanted a relaxing holiday away from the hustle and bustle and Oak Cottage was perfect. The garden was ideal for our four dogs, plenty of room for them to run around and play.

We would definitely return. It would be a suitable property for anyone with mobility issues as it has a shower room and two bedrooms downstairs.
