“Perfect for comfort, countryside and walking”
The hotel is a lovely, old 18th century house with quite a history. The bedrooms are a good size, quiet and comfortable. There is a comfortable and elegant lounge and a cosy bar.
The breakfasts are excellent. There are no evening meals but several places to eat nearby. The view from our bedroom was exceptional.
The owners are welcoming and helpful and we certainly plan to come again to this hotel and this beautiful area.

“A thoroughly relaxing place to stay in a beautiful part of the country”
Lowbyer Manor Country House has all the features and particularly the character of the old establishments that I remember staying in around the border, from the Cheviots and up into the Highlands as a youngster holidaying with my parents back in the 1950’s and 60’s.
From a warm welcome to the delicious food and comfortable accommodation - a very well-run ’ship’ with bags of history in a stunningly beautiful part of northern England
(I’m running out of superlatives!)
Beautiful location - very peaceful
Delicious food and heart
Down to earth owners - good folk!

“Stayed for only one night but had a lovely time. Would certainly recommend to friends and family”
The accommodation is ideally located and easy to find. The building and surrounds are excellent, as is the interior (lounge-bar-bedrooms)
I would thoroughly recommend Lowbyer M.C.H. to anyone looking for a one night stopover or as a base to explore Alston and the surrounding area.
The local pubs, which are just a short stroll away, provide comfort, good food and good value.
The owners have set up some feeding boxes in the conifer trees which attract red squirrels which could easily be viewed from our bedroom window.
The location is excellent
The owner, Laura, is very welcoming and very helpful with local information

“A relaxing break in a beautiful corner of England”
We’ve been visiting Alson for about 30 years and have always done self-catering. I booked Lowbyer as I’ve always wanted to stay there.
We had a warm welcome from Laura and Richard, and had tea and biscuits in their beautiful lounge with stunning views over the fells.
Tea and coffee facilities in the room included various kinds of tea - eg green or Earl Grey - and there was hot chocolate too (and biscuits!) The beds were covered by beautiful quilts made by a relative of the owners. The shower was very spacious and the water was the right temperature without any adjustments.
Breakfast was fantastic - I especially enjoyed the fresh fruit salad - also the full English with locally sourced ingredients. There was a cosy bar and a beautiful garden, and evidence of the age of the house (1778), pig sty (unused now!), signs of a dovecote, mounting block and hooks to hold horses’ reins.
Alston is a fascinating town, full of history with lovely walks (we took our dog) and two rivers - the Nent and the South Tyne. A steep cobbled street, Market Cross, and a good variety of shops. Also some dog-friendly places to eat, and the locals are very friendly.
Laura and Richard are the perfect hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them . I can’t wait to go back!
Location, breakfasts, owners!
One of my favourite places. Just outside town, high in the Pennines.
Best breakfasts EVER! So much choice and beautiful dining room.
Laura and Richard are just great!
Take care crossing road - property on sharp bend on main road
Local Gems:Alston is a gem of a town. Love the walk from the Rutts to Gossip Gate and the Seven Sisters Waterfall
En Route:Westmorland Services (Tebay) - best in England!

“Very pleasant B&B accommodation set in a beautiful area with much to see.”
Very nice room and guest room, with good supply of information about local attractions, walks etc.
Very tastefully decorated and furnished and still cosy and friendly.
Breakfast was excellent.
Both Laura and Richard, our hosts, were very welcoming and pleasant.

“Our third visit and we will definitely be back”
Alston is a wonderful village, set high up in the Cumbrian countryside. To the edge of it is one of the most fantastic roads - the A686 - already chosen as one of the 10 most beautiful roads in the world.
Lowbyer Manor is a real gem, tucked back from the main road, where visitors are greeted with a tray of tea or coffee and biscuits in the gorgeous visitors’ lounge. The lounge is equipped with daily papers, books, games and internet access. The rooms are lovely, with special details such as handmade quilts and a good selection of teas and MUGS - rather than piddly cups!
Breakfast is fab. We have always found our hosts most welcoming. Nothing seems too much trouble and they have rooms where dogs can stay with visitors. Long may Lowbyer Manor survive!
Everything about the place is lovely and well thought out.
Be Aware:You will have a great night’s sleep!
Local Gems:Alston House does very good food

“Just what we needed”
We have visited Lowbyer Manor on three occasions now and have always been made to feel very welcome.
Having a child and dog it can sometimes be difficult to find B&Bs that genuinely feels dog- and child-friendly. The guest lounge is always a lovely space to end the evening as well.
