“A romantic holiday cottage for two”
What a beautiful cottage. We loved Awel-For and its location right next to a deserted shingle beach.
Specifically Recommend:Sitting by the fire drinking wine and eating local food.
Local Gems:Royal Oak pub in Aberaeron.
Naturally Scrumptious in Aberaeron, specifically the Spanish drinking chocolate.

“Lovely, romantic cottage.....”
I had booked Awel-For about a month before we went, as a surprise anniversary and birthday celebration for my wife. She didn’t know anything about it until I mentioned it on Facebook on the morning we left and she read about it on there!!
We had visited the area a few years ago, so knew roughly what to expect from the local area.
The cottage is lovely and suited our needs really well. The owners have put a lot of thought into the cottage and everything that you need is there. It has been nicely finished and has some lovely tasteful decorations, pictures, lamps, candles, tealights, etc. The log fire was lovely to have and really made it very cosy on November evenings.
It was lovely being so close to the beach and the sea, although when the tide is in it is hard to walk on the beach because of its stoney nature, however lovely when the tide is out. Pip, the dog loved it.
Visited Aberaeron a couple of times for lunch, The Harbourmaster, once for Sunday lunch in the dining room, and the second time for lunch in the bar....both very good. Also visited Llangrannog on a very stormy and wet day...lovely watching the rough sea.
Can thoroughly recommend Awel-For and would not hesitate to return.
Visiting Aberaeron and Llangrannog.
Local Gems:The beaches.
Aberaeron and Llangrannog.

“A lovely seaside getaway for couples, this pretty cottage practically comes with its own private pebble beach and is a great base for exploring the beautiful Ceredigion coastline”
We booked a last minute seaside break with Under the Thatch, and plumped for this small, pretty cottage right on the coast. As it turned out we were fabulously lucky with the weather, which despite being late Sept-early Oct was a glorious 25 degrees every day.
Awel For (pronounced a-wul vor and meaning sea breeze in Welsh) is a tiny whitewashed fisherman’s cottage opposite a lovely church and located on a little road that ends at a pebbly beach. There is no sea view from the house, but you can see the sea from the road and are at the beach in moments.
There are a number of other cottages nearby, some modern and some old, but it is a very quiet area. The road to the cottage is tiny so won’t fit two cars abreast, but it is a quiet road and we rarely met anyone coming the other way.
The house is delightful and consists of just three rooms on one level - lounge with kitchenette, bedroom and small bathroom with roll top bath. The rooms are tiny but high ceilinged, so you don’t feel cramped. Whitewashed stone walls and a large fireplace in the lounge give the place plenty of character, and little touches like driftwood framed mirrors lightly reference a sea theme without it being overdone.
The only bum notes were in the lounge, where a cheap looking modern style leather suite did not seem in keeping with the rest of the decor and the overly large table took up way too much room.
The sofabed and larger table make it possible for four people to stay - but the cottage is so tiny that four people would make a cosy space seem cramped. I would recommend that the owners focus on couples and get some more appropriate furniture!
But this minor point certainly didn’t spoil the ambience, and with a large fire going and venison sausages cooking it was a lovely space!
Llanon itself is a small village, a little down at heel but overall pleasant enough, and well located for trips up and down the gorgeous coastline. There are plenty of lovely places to visit within a short drive, and a short walk takes you up to the main coast road through the village, which would probably mean decent bus connections if you were planning to come by public transport.
Some of our best moments were spent at the beach right by the cottage. Being pebbly and not near a resort, you generally get the place to yourselves. The sea is very shallow here so it has a different character depending on the time of day.
We spent evenings sat on the pebbles with the sea lapping almost at our feet, glass of wine in hand, watching the sun go down. Then during the day almost a mile of sandy beach is uncovered by the retreating tide, leaving shallow pools that warmed up quickly in the unseasonal sunshine, perfect for paddling in, and plenty of rock pools to explore. Bliss!
Explore along the beautiful coastline but don’t overlook the local beach - take a picnic and a bottle of wine and make a day of it!
Local Gems:The beaches at Llangrannog are stunning, as are the coastal walks - well worth spending a full day there. New Quay was also pretty and boat trips run from the harbour throughout the day.
I adored the pretty village of Aberaeron. It’s on the coast but set back slightly from the sea, so the main feature is the harbour. I highly recommend steak at the Harbourmaster restaurant and lunch at the Hive, both overlooking the pretty harbour full of boats. There are some nice shops too, and a fabulous deli selling local cheese and amazing garlic sourdough bread!
We stopped off at Macnynlleth on the way back to Leeds, a very pleasant town with lovely shops, very nice to wander round for half an hour.
