“Seeking solace in the crags and fells Smallwood House Hotel makes my walking trips into perfect holidays”
Have stayed at Smallwood several times because the location in Ambleside is perfect for my needs (fell walking) and my wife’s needs (shopping).
It is an ideal centre of access to all parts of the Lake District. It is a family run hotel and is dog- and eco-friendly. The staff are excellent and make the place feel like a home-from-home.
Having found Smallwood House I will never have to look for alternative accommodation when visiting the Lakes again.
As far as I am concerned Smallwood House is the perfect Lakes’ guest house.
Local Gems:Smallwood House is situated in the middle of the busy Lakes town of Ambleside and is literally just yards from all the attractions, shops, pubs, parks and transport facilities to take you to other parts of the Lakes.
En Route:I travelled by train to Windermere, bus to Bowness, then lake steamer to Ambleside - that journey takes some beating!

“Smallwood House is the centre of the Lake District!”
This was our second visit, so we must have enjoyed the first time!
The hotel is a B&B with meals provided in the evening on certain nights - advanced notice is required the day before. However, there are numerous eating places within Ambleside including Chinese (Cantonese), Indian, Italian, Pizza, Bistros and even a Fish & Chip shop. The Bistro that we used were turning people away at 7pm so it is always better to book.
Smallwood House has a small car park at the rear (which can get a bit grid locked), but with parking at a premium and so expensive, a little shuffling of vehicles is not a problem.
The town is very busy in season and can be a little noisy at night if you stay in one of the front rooms, but it goes quiet after midnight. There were no children or animals staying at the time we were there.
There is a park with a putting green and crazy golf at the bottom of the road. There is also a cinema across from the hotel.
The bedrooms are located across three storeys which means a lot of stairs and no lift, but it only seems to be a problem when you are carrying luggage!
The owners, Christine and Anthony (the cook) are very friendly and helpful.
The Lake District has lots to offer even if you don’t sail or walk.
Take the time to look at the hotel, the location, the area, before you make up your mind....we have been there twice and will go again.
Local Gems:Mathew’s Bistro
Cinema
Town shops
Two hours from home to Ambleside - we did stop on a motorway service station..... but I wouldn’t recommend it!
