“A beautiful, quirky caravan, perfect for those who hanker for that simple, rustic life - but don’t want to suffer any hardships in the process!”
I have always wanted to stay in a gypsy caravan and was drawn to this one in particular because it was one of the few still decorated in full gypsy style, inside and out. Many of the caravans I have seen have been painted cream inside and made all very pleasant and contemporary - but surely this misses the point of the whole affair!
Now my partner was, it must be confessed, not one hundred percent sold on the idea - and even I suspected that the reality might not be as pleasant as the fantasy - so we only booked two nights. Our only mistake!
We arrived to find the caravan tucked away on its own in a little copse of trees on private farmland - a long way from the rows and rows of caravans that put us off a more standard camping experience. The farm was a short distance away but screened off by the trees. It was very peaceful and we saw people from the farm only once or twice at a distance.
The caravan itself was everything I hoped it would be - so quaint and quirky! Even my partner had to agree it was pretty special. He was happy to discover that the seating area converted into a cosy double bed, and that the caravan had an electric lamp and a heater to keep us toasty. Even better, we had a little cabin alongside that contained a seating area with wood-burning stove, kitchenette complete with gas camping hob and sink, and a small bathroom with roll top bath and large walk in shower.
Going to bed was an adventure in itself. We felt like kids as we crept out of the cabin into the dark with torch in hand and clambered into our caravan. Once snuggled up in bed we heard noises and convinced ourselves it was the bogeyman - but it turned out to be a cow sniffing along the hedge of the field next door! We slept like logs and woke to birdsong and the pitter patter of a passing shower on the canvas roof of the caravan. Soon the sun was out and we were frying sausages on the camp stove and soaking up the sunshine on the pretty cabin verandah.
Now that’s what I call camping!
We loved the caravan so much that we hardly left, but we still fitted in a walk in the Brecon Beacons and a trip to Abergavenny. We’d love to do it again - but next time we will book a whole week!
This place is perfect for couples looking for a rustic hideaway. You could take a babe in arms - there is a small pull out drawer that doubles as a cot in the caravan! But although there is a sofa bed in the cabin I think it would spoil the idyll to bring friends or kids!
Be Aware:Warning - the bed is high up in the caravan and you need to clamber up into it, while the location is a short walk from the farmhouse, where you park your car. No worries for most people but not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Also note that the comfort level and kitchen-bathroom facilities were great for a caravan style holiday, and in keeping with the rustic vibe - but don’t compare to a hotel if that is the standard you are looking for!
Abergavenny is a pretty town, worth a visit for the handful of lovely little shops and the big vintage furniture store.
Our foodie side was more than satisfied with dinner at the famous Walnut Tree Inn and afternoon tea with exquisite cakes at the beautiful Angel Hotel.
The Brecon Beacons are stunning and well worth a visit, and you aren’t that far from Cardiff and the fantastic St Fagan’s museum in one direction and places like Hay on Wye in the other, if you are there for a longer break

“Idyllic - a little piece of heaven”
Tucked away on the farm, the caravan and supporting cabin were private, secluded and perfectly appointed - even better than I had hoped for.
The facilities provided were everything that we needed (piping hot water, bath, shower, fridge, microwave, toaster, radio and wood-burning stove) - simplicity to perfection.
Everything spotlessly clean and in perfect working order - and romantic!
Unique, romantic rustic hideaway...
Local Gems:We did not stir from this perfect spot, except to walk around the meadows and woods!
En Route:We came direct from Bristol and needed no stops.
Owner’s Reply:
Please note. The caravan is perfect for two but one child up to around age 5 would also be welcome. The cabin sofa bed is more suitable for two children rather than a further two adults.
One very well behaved dog welcome, but only in the cabin (not caravan). Note that there are sheep in neighbouring fields and a (friendly) male Labrador lives on the farm.
